The ASX really is shrinking but it’s not unprecedented, research finds

More companies left the ASX in the past two years than at any similar period since the recession of the early 1990s, according to an academic paper authored for the corporate regulator that concludes this exodus ultimately may not be for structural reasons but merely a cyclical trend.

As part of the Australian Securities and Investment Commission’s analysis of the growth of private markets at the expense of public markets, the regulator asked a Melbourne University researcher to assess the state of the ASX compared to similar markets in Britain and the United States.
