A little-known basin three kilometres below the surface of south-east Queensland is quietly emerging as a real prospect to solve a looming gas shortage and boost the country’s perilous self-sufficiency in oil supply.
Growing excitement about the Taroom Trough also hints at the potential for a land grab last seen in the early days of the Queensland coal seam gas boom, with many of the same figures who invested in what is now an $80 billion industry already carving out their stakes in the latest discovery.
