Overview

Australian shares are poised to open higher, bolstered by renewed technology enthusiasm on Wall Street after Nvidia said it would invest $US5 billion ($7.6 billion) into rival Intel.

All three major US benchmarks reset intraday record highs. The small-cap Russell 2000 Index did the same. The NYSE Fang + Index, comprised of the top 10 highly traded tech stocks, rose to a record, as did the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index. The S&P 500 closed 0.5 per cent higher to 6631.96 after reaching 6656.80 during the session.

Nvidia’s investment added to optimism about the US outlook a day after Federal Reserve policymakers voted to cut rates by a quarter of one percentage point and signalled a path to two more similar cuts before the end of the year.
