Investors have warned that new fees to have mergers and acquisitions assessed by the competition watchdog will cause takeover deals to be abandoned and undermine a productivity push by Treasurer Jim Chalmers.

The higher-than-expected fees – which could top $1 million – also clash with the government’s attempt to speed up regulatory approvals for crucial investments required for the energy transition and housing, investors and dealmakers have argued.
