RBA spared ‘gangland-style pressures’ facing Fed, but risks lurk

The Reserve Bank of Australia is not under the “gangland-style” pressures put on the US Federal Reserve by Donald Trump – to borrow a phrase from former board member Warwick McKibbin – but former central bank insiders are wary that the possibility of partisan appointments and rising government debt could pose risks to the central bank’s independence.

US Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell has come under repeated attack during the second Trump administration for not bowing to the president’s insistence that rates be cut further.
