Telstra customers facing hefty price hikes on mobile phone plans are trading down to cheaper pre-paid options, clouding the earnings outlook for the nation’s biggest telecoms provider.

Investors and analysts were disappointed with weak growth in Telstra’s mobile phone customer numbers despite a 31 per cent jump in annual net profit to $2.34 billion and a new $1 billion share buyback.
