ASX lifts in first day of 2025 trade, energy stocks rally

The Australian sharemarket returned to the green on the first day of 2025 trading, buoyed by a bout of momentum trading and a rally in energy stocks.

Following a choppy morning session, the S&P/ASX 200 closed at 8201.2, up 0.5 per cent or 42 points. The bourse spent a brief period in the red before settling higher on Thursday afternoon, with ten of its 11 sectors closing higher. The energy, materials and real estate sectors rose more than 1 per cent, while consumer staples closed marginally in the red.
