Australia’s superannuation performance tests have changed accountability for the better. Super fund trustees now live in fear of failure which, at its heart, is a good thing for ordinary Australians and their retirement savings.
However, clearly there’s change on the horizon. The structure has created an industry of funds that look, feel and perform very similarly. This, you could argue, is holding back productivity and distorting capital allocation, and Treasurer Jim Chalmers has made it clear he’s heard the case for change and is considering it.
