Bruce Preston, one of the nation’s top academic monetary policy economists and the new appointee to the Reserve Bank of Australia board, has in the past argued for higher interest rates.

His appointment by Treasurer Jim Chalmers on Thursday meant that Labor has now placed a clear majority of the members on the nine-person interest rate board, which is officially independent of the government.
