Overview

Australian shares are poised to open lower after JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs started Wall Street’s third-quarter reporting season with solid results but failed to buoy US equities. Meanwhile, chip stocks found buyers after a morning swoon.

S&P/ASX 200 futures were down 30 points or 0.3 per cent to 8788. In New York, the S&P 500 was down 0.02 per cent. Health care led losses in six industry sectors.

US markets were little changed overall ahead of the September consumer price data release later on Wednesday.

The closely watched consumer price index is expected to rise 0.6 per cent after a 0.4 per cent increase a month earlier, based on the median projection in a Bloomberg survey of economists. That would mark the largest advance in five months.
