The Australian sharemarket is becoming increasingly concentrated, with seven of the 10 largest stocks now miners or banks, a narrowing that has left investors more exposed than at any time over the past two decades.
And the change is happening at a breakneck pace. The 10 largest companies on the S&P/ASX 200 now account for almost 50 per cent of the benchmark’s value, up from 44 per cent on the same measure in 2019, according to Sebastian Mullins, the head of multi-asset investing at Schroders.
