Overview

Investors are returning to the Australian sharemarket after weeks of pain, with a ceasefire in the Middle East driving the biggest one-day jump this year but raising a new question for fund managers – is this a momentary reprieve or will a brittle truce give way to longer lasting peace?

Despite the S&P/ASX 200 surging 2.6 per cent on Wednesday and adding $80 billion to the benchmark, major investors are still hedging their bets. Even with a ceasefire, many of the worries hanging over the economy – particularly runaway inflation from higher oil prices – remain unchanged.
