The head of the Australian sharemarket operator’s peak governance committee says there is no compelling evidence that increasing the target of women on corporate boards to 40 per cent will add value, prompting a sharp rebuke from one of the country’s major superannuation funds.

Former Reserve Bank of Australia governor Phil Lowe was appointed to run the ASX’s governance body in November and on Tuesday unveiled draft rules that all but abandon a controversial earlier push for companies to introduce strict diversity targets, and disclose directors’ personal characteristics, including sexuality, Indigenous heritage, or disabilities.
