After having rallied at the open, the S&P 500 reversed direction and closed down as the US and Israel separately said they were intensifying their attacks on Iran, denting hopes for a de-escalation.
Brent Crude settled above $US103 a barrel for a second straight session. Gold slid, holding below the $US5100 mark. The US 10-year bond yield edged higher after fourth-quarter economic growth was revised lower and inflation accelerated.
