S&P 500 resets record high in broad rally

The S&P 500 rallied to a record closing high, putting the 7000-point mark within reach, with nine of its 11 industry sectors advancing after December’s mixed jobs data led traders to pare bets for a January interest rate cut.

The benchmark rose 0.7 per cent to 6966.28 in New York; it earlier reached 6977.60. The Nasdaq Composite closed up 0.8 per cent. Gold topped $US4500 an ounce. Silver was 6 per cent higher.
