Sultan Al-Jaber: the other key man risk to Santos’ $36.4b takeover

n Emirati politician who presided over the COP28 climate talks in 2023 has emerged as the key risk to a deal for the $36.4 billion takeover of Santos, and will decide whether the transaction ever goes before the Foreign Investment Review Board and federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers.

Last month’s unexpected announcement of a delay of at least four weeks between any final deal between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company-led bidding consortium and Australia’s second-biggest oil and gas producer on the terms for an acquisition triggered questions about who, or what, held the power to say yes or no.
