Transurban’s new West Gate Tunnel in Melbourne is attracting fewer vehicles than analysts expected, the toll group’s financial statements show as it swung back into the black with an interim profit of $343 million.
The $10.2 billion tunnel, which opened in mid-December after eight years of construction and more than $3 billion worth of cost blow-outs ($2 billion of which was paid by Transurban), has been attracting an average of 35,000 vehicles each day, with about 20 per cent of the traffic consisting of trucks.
